Mo tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

Marlborough District Council is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Asset Engineer to take a lead role in managing and enhancing one of the region's most critical infrastructure networks.

This is your opportunity to combine technical expertise, strategic asset management, and environmental stewardship to help safeguard Marlborough's communities, economy, and natural environment for generations to come. Working within our Rivers and Drainage team, you'll drive the long-term planning and performance of vital flood protection and drainage assets, helping the region respond to growth, climate change, and natural hazards.

Every stopbank, river channel, flood protection structure, drainage network and pump station plays a crucial role in protecting people, property and the environment. As Asset Engineer, you'll be responsible for ensuring these assets are managed sustainably, effectively, and with future resilience in mind. You'll help shape investment decisions, influence infrastructure strategy, and provide expert engineering advice that delivers lasting value for our community.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Asset planning — Lead the Rivers Asset Management Plan and lifecycle strategies, ensuring alignment with long‑term council objectives.
  • Performance monitoring — Oversee asset condition, data quality, and service‑level reporting.
  • Flood and river management — Support flood management planning, emergency response frameworks, and compliance with engineering and statutory requirements.
  • Programme and financial input — Prioritise maintenance and renewal programmes and contribute to capital and operational budgeting.
  • Technical leadership — Provide expert river engineering advice, prepare technical reports, and support investigations, valuations, and scheme reviews.
  • Stakeholder engagement — Work with iwi, landowners, community groups, and external agencies, communicating technical information clearly.
  • Risk and compliance — Maintain risk registers and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and audit processes.
